Schedule Substack Notes

Updated · Multi Post Social guide

You can schedule Substack Notes from Multi Post Social: short posts with text, an image or a link that appear in the Notes feed and on your publication, published at the time you choose. Notes are different from newsletter posts, and understanding the split saves confusion. This guide covers that difference, the publication you need, the connection steps, the limits the composer applies, and the habits that bring readers from Notes to your newsletter.

What you can schedule on Substack

Three kinds of Notes publish directly: a text note, a note with one or more images, and a note with a link that renders as a card, including links to your own newsletter posts. Restacks of other writers’ posts with a comment are made in the Substack app. Multi Post Social shows likes, restacks and replies for your notes in analytics and brings replies into the inbox.

Notes versus newsletter posts

A newsletter post is the long article you email to subscribers; Substack schedules those in its own editor and no tool changes that. A Note is a short public post in Substack’s social feed, closer to a Threads or Bluesky post. Notes are what Multi Post Social schedules. The usual pattern is to write the newsletter in Substack, then schedule two or three Notes over the following days that quote a line from it and link to it.

Account requirements

You need a Substack account with at least one publication; Notes are posted as the publication’s author. Co-authors with publishing rights on a shared publication can connect it too. Paid or free publications both work, and the subscriber count makes no difference to scheduling.

How to connect Substack

  1. Open Channels, press Connect channel and choose Substack.
  2. Sign in on Substack’s screen, using the magic-link email if that is how your account logs in.
  3. Pick the publication to post as, and accept the permissions to publish Notes and read engagement.
  4. Set the time zone and a light posting schedule; one or two Notes a day is plenty.

Best practices when you schedule Substack Notes

  • Quote one striking line from your newsletter and link to the post; do not summarize the whole thing.
  • Ask a question readers can answer in a sentence; replies pull the note into more feeds.
  • Skip hashtags; Substack does not use them. Mention your publication instead.
  • Share a Note the day after a newsletter goes out, then another three days later with a different line.
  • Reply to every answer from the inbox; Notes conversations convert readers to subscribers.
  • Turn a LinkedIn post into a Note with the AI assistant shortening it to a few sentences.

Mobile tips

The quickest Notes are written on the phone right after a newsletter goes out: open the Multi Post Social app, paste the post link, add one line and add it to the queue. The link card preview shows before you queue.

Two more habits help on small screens. Keep a saved idea on the Create board called Next Note with the three angles you want to try for each issue, so you never start from a blank box on the phone. And set one Substack slot a day in the posting schedule rather than many: Notes reward a steady voice more than volume, and a single daily slot keeps the queue easy to review in the calendar list view before you leave for the day.

Substack rules to keep in mind

Substack expects Notes to be genuine conversation, limits repeated promotional notes and applies its content guidelines to scheduled notes as to manual ones. Keep notes short and about your writing. Substack’s support center explains Notes and publication policies.
