Free Hashtag Generator for Instagram, TikTok and X

Updated · Multi Post Social guide

This free hashtag generator turns a topic into three groups of tags: broad ones for the main subject, medium ones that do most of the discovery work, and niche ones for the small communities that care most. Pick a network and the tool also tells you how many to use. Copy a group, paste it into your caption or first comment, and you are done. It runs in your browser, needs no account and stores nothing.

Recommended on Instagram: 3 to 8, often in the first comment.

Broad (5)

Large, busy tags. Use one or two so the post is found in the main topic.

  • #coffee
  • #coffeelover
  • #cafe
  • #shop
  • #opening

Medium (10)

Active but less crowded. These do most of the work for discovery.

  • #coffeetime
  • #coffeeshop
  • #baristalife
  • #latteart
  • #coffeetips
  • #coffeeideas
  • #shoptips
  • #shopideas
  • #openingtips
  • #openingideas

Niche (10)

Small communities that care about the exact subject. Expect fewer but better views.

  • #pourover
  • #homebarista
  • #specialtycoffee
  • #coffeeroasting
  • #coffeecommunity
  • #dailycoffee
  • #shopcommunity
  • #dailyshop
  • #openingcommunity
  • #dailyopening

Tags are built from a built-in word list plus your own words. Check each one on the network before posting; meanings change.

How the hashtag generator works

The tool reads the words you type, looks each one up in a built-in list of related tags, and adds variations built from your own words such as a tips tag and an ideas tag. Broad tags are the large, busy ones; medium tags are active but less crowded; niche tags are specific to the exact subject. The result is deterministic: the same topic always gives the same tags, so a team can share the same set. It does not call a network API, so it cannot know today’s post count for a tag; check a tag on the network before you lean on it.

Because it is a word-list tool, it is best at common subjects: food, fitness, travel, marketing, design, pets, books, music, tech, education, beauty and so on. For unusual topics it leans on your own words, which is still useful: the tags people search for are usually the plain words for the thing.

How many hashtags per network

Every network treats hashtags differently, and the right number has changed over the years. The table reflects what each network says today and what tends to work in practice. More is rarely better; relevance is.

Broad, medium and niche: why the mix matters

A broad tag puts your post in a river of millions; it is seen for seconds and then buried. A niche tag puts it in a small pond where the people who care will scroll past it for days. Medium tags sit between: enough traffic to matter, little enough competition to stay visible. A set with one or two broad tags, three or four medium tags and two or three niche tags gives a post the best spread. The generator groups its output this way so you can build that mix in one copy per group.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using the same block of 30 tags on every post. Networks treat repeated identical tag blocks as a spam signal.
  • Tags that do not match the image or video. People who arrive through a tag and leave at once teach the network the post is irrelevant.
  • Banned or restricted tags. Some ordinary-looking tags are hidden by networks; a quick search on the network shows whether a tag page exists.
  • Tags in a language your audience does not read.
  • Forgetting that a tag is a word: capitalize each word inside a long tag (#SocialMediaTips) so screen readers read it correctly.

Checking a hashtag before you use it

A generator gives you candidates; a two-minute check turns them into a set you trust. Search the tag on the network and look at three things. How recent are the top posts? A tag whose top posts are months old is quiet, and a quiet niche tag can still be useful, but a quiet medium tag is a sign it has faded. What kind of posts appear? If the tag is used mostly for something unrelated to your subject, drop it. Does the tag page exist at all? Networks hide tag pages for terms they restrict, and posting with a hidden tag can limit the reach of the whole post. Keep a note of tags that passed the check so you do not repeat the work next week; in the product that note is a saved hashtag group.

Hashtag groups in the product

Inside Multi Post Social you save hashtag groups by topic and insert one with a click in the composer. Groups appear under every network tab, and the composer counts tags against each network’s limit. On Instagram the group can go straight to the first comment, which keeps the caption clean. The scheduler guide shows where the groups live, and the AI assistant can suggest tags that match the finished text rather than the topic alone.

Safe use of hashtags

Hashtags are public labels. Do not attach your post to a tag about a tragedy, a protest or someone else’s campaign just because it is busy. Check what a tag means on the network before you use it, and keep tags relevant to the post; the acceptable use policy treats repeated unrelated tags as spam.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the hashtag generator really free?

Yes. It runs in your browser, needs no account and stores nothing. The product adds saved groups and per-network counting on top.

Why does the tool not show how popular each hashtag is?

It does not call the networks, so it cannot see live post counts. The three groups are sized by how busy tags usually are. Check a tag on the network for today’s number.

Should hashtags go in the caption or the first comment on Instagram?

Both work. The first comment keeps the caption readable; the product can schedule the first comment for you.

Can I use the same hashtags on every post?

Rotate them. Save two or three groups per topic and alternate. Identical tag blocks on every post are a spam signal on most networks.
