Social Media Image Sizes 2026: Every Network in One Table
Updated · Multi Post Social guide
Every social media image size you need for 2026 in one filterable table: profile photos, feed images in square, portrait and landscape, Stories and Reels, covers and banners, and the link preview image, for 12 networks. Each row shows the pixel size, the aspect ratio, the file limit and a note about safe zones or cropping. Filter by network and keep the tab open while you export.

How to read the table
Sizes are in pixels, width first. Where a network accepts a range, the table lists the size that looks sharp on current phones without producing a huge file. Ratios tell you the shape, which matters more than the exact pixels: a 4:5 image at 1080 by 1350 and at 2160 by 2700 will both display the same way. File limits are the maximum the network accepts; smaller files load faster and the networks compress everything anyway. Notes flag the places where a network crops or overlays text, which is where most mistakes happen.
The five ratios that cover almost everything
| Ratio | Example size | Works on | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1:1 square | 1080 × 1080 | Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, Substack, X | The safest single export when a post goes to many networks |
| 4:5 portrait | 1080 × 1350 | Instagram feed, Facebook feed, Threads, LinkedIn documents | Takes the most screen space in the feed |
| 9:16 vertical | 1080 × 1920 | Stories, Reels, TikTok, Shorts, Pinterest video | Any full-screen vertical format |
| 2:3 tall | 1000 × 1500 | Pinterest Pins | Pinterest only; taller gets cut |
| 1.91:1 landscape | 1200 × 630 | Link previews everywhere, Facebook covers, X in-stream | Open Graph images and link posts |
A simple production habit: design in 4:5, export a 1:1 crop for networks that prefer squares, and keep a 9:16 version for Stories, Reels and Shorts. Three files cover more than ninety percent of placements.
Safe zones
A safe zone is the part of the image that stays visible on every device and under every overlay. On vertical formats the network draws your name, caption and buttons over the bottom of the screen and the top carries the status bar, so keep text out of roughly the top 250 pixels and bottom 340 pixels of a 1080 by 1920 frame. On TikTok the right edge also holds the like and comment buttons. On YouTube channel banners only the central 1546 by 423 area shows on every device; the rest appears on TVs and wide screens. Cover photos on Facebook and LinkedIn are cropped at the sides on phones, so center the important part.

A resizing workflow that takes five minutes
Designers waste the most time on social images by starting from the wrong canvas. Start tall. Set up a 1080 by 1350 artboard, keep the subject and any text inside the central square, and you can crop a 1:1 version without redesigning. For Stories and Reels, extend the same design to 1080 by 1920 and move the text into the safe zone rather than scaling it down; scaled-down text is the most common reason a Story is unreadable on a phone. Export each version with a clear name that includes the network and ratio, so the right file lands in the right tab of the composer.
- Design on a 1080 × 1350 canvas with the subject inside the central 1080 × 1080 square.
- Export the 4:5 file for Instagram and Facebook feeds, Threads and LinkedIn.
- Crop to 1:1 for X, Substack and anywhere a square reads better.
- Extend to 9:16, move text into the safe zone, and export for Stories, Reels, TikTok and Shorts.
- Make a 1200 × 630 link image once per campaign and set it as the page’s Open Graph image.
- Add alt text when you upload; the composer reminds you if it is missing.
Video follows the same logic: shoot or edit vertical at 1080 by 1920, keep captions inside the safe zone, and export a 16:9 version only for YouTube’s standard player and X. The repurposing guide walks through turning one long video into every short format.
File types and sizes
Use JPG for photographs and PNG for graphics with flat colors, text or transparency. WebP is accepted by most networks now and gives smaller files, but export a JPG or PNG when a network rejects it. Keep images under 1 MB where you can; networks compress above that and the result is softer than a small file you compressed yourself. For video, MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio works everywhere, and the channels overview lists the length limits per network.
Format checks in the composer
Inside Multi Post Social, the composer checks every image and video against the formats of the channels you selected and warns about wrong ratios, oversized files and missing alt text before you schedule. Custom video covers can be set for the networks that allow them. The scheduler guide explains the checks, and the free tools hub collects the other helpers.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best single image size for social media?
A 1080 × 1350 portrait (4:5) for feeds, with a 1080 × 1080 square crop for networks that prefer squares and a 1080 × 1920 vertical for Stories, Reels and Shorts. Those three cover most placements.
Why does my image look blurry after upload?
The network compressed it. Export at the listed size, keep the file under about 1 MB, and avoid uploading a screenshot of an image, which has already been compressed once.
Do these sizes change often?
Ratios are stable; exact pixel recommendations and overlays shift a little each year. This table is reviewed with each major network change and the date at the top shows the last update.
What size should the link preview image be?
1200 × 630 pixels, ratio 1.91:1, under 1 MB, set as the Open Graph image on your page. Most networks read it when you share a link.
